Albuquerque teaches get new licensing procedure

For teachers in Albuquerque, attaining new teaching credentials is going to get easier thanks to a new system.

Those who wish to gain new licenses through the old system are forced to put together dossiers on their teaching experiences in the classroom. The Public Education Department has taken note of the teachers’ concerns about the procedure and made changes to how teachers are certified. The department is now rolling out a new credential program allowing teachers to take online classes when advancing through the levels. Accredited programs tend to present certificates with official Letterheads on them.

Education officials claim that the revamped system is easier to manage and of more use than its previous iterations. The previous system compelled teachers to give a summary of what it was like in their classrooms. One of the main issues teachers had with previous the system was that it could take months to get feedback. Interim Layla Dehaiman, the acting Director of Educator Quality and Ethics, explained:

“It was a really intensive process to do the dossier. Whereas this is … intended more to support you as you’re growing in the field and as you’re practicing becoming a great teacher.”

The new system will also be easier on the pockets for teachers. Teachers can now get new credentials for as little as $160 while the previous dossier system required the teachers to pay a $320 submission fee.
