Unique bike race to take place in Gastonia

The second United States qualifier of the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship will be held in Gastonia next month.

It will take place at George Poston Park which has a pump track that was recently completed. Brandon Black of Gaston County Travel and Tourism said that this is a significant event for Gastonia and the county.

Close to 40 people have already registered for the event with room for 120 female and 120 riders. Another related event is taking place the weekend before this event in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is nearby, and Black is hoping that many will want to spend the week and participate in this event as well.

Banner printing companies in the area can be hired to create displays to promote such events and encourage people to participate.

Pump track are different from regular cycling tracks in that instead of using pedals for motion, dips and rises in the course allow cyclists to move their weight around to keep going. The track at George Poston Park was designed by Velosolutions, a Swiss company, and is the first of its kind in the area. Cathy Hart, director of Parks and Recreation, said the pump track has become a favorite activity of the residents.

The championship is scheduled to be held the weekend of September 21 and 22.
