The Gaston Community Foundation has awarded the city of Gastonia $65,000 for the support of the Winter Weather Shelter of Gaston County and for the expansion of community and educational programing for the Sister Cities of Gastonia.
To help support vulnerable residents during the winter months, the Board of Directors of the Gaston Community Foundation approved a grant of $45,000 for the 2026-2027 season of the Gaston County Winter Weather Shelter/Center. The center offers a safe, heated space for anyone in the community in need of shelter when the temperature is 32 degrees or below. The award comes from the unrestricted funds of the Foundation, which are used to advance strategic initiatives that strengthen communities throughout Gaston County.
An amount of $20,000 was also awarded by the Foundation for the support of Gastonia Sister Cities. Scholarships for student travel to the Sister Cities of Gastonia will come from $15,000 of that funding and will enable greater accessibility for cultural experiences and international travel for students in the area.
The return of World Wide Wednesday and building increased capacity for the Sister Cities Peace Crew program will be funded by the remaining $5,000. Opportunities for residents to learn about different cultures and countries will be expanded with this program, which will also strengthen the community outreach and international programming of the city.
News of such funding and their benefits for a city can be disseminated with flyer printing.
