This money will fund the first phase of a project that builds on recent investments from both private and public donations. Interactive sidewalk art, murals, branded Banners, and decorative planters are planned that will create a stronger sense of place, add some color, and encourage people to spend more time in the downtown area.
Director of Economic Development, Kristy Crisp, said:
“This grant gives us an opportunity to build on the momentum we've already created downtown.”
Crisp added that a big difference in how people experience the downtown can result from small improvements such as coordinated streetscape features and public art. Crisp said the goal is to create a place where people will want to invest, dine, shop, and visit. Administrator of Keep Gastonia Beautiful, Juliann Lehman, said that beautification efforts such as planters and public art can enhance the appeal of the downtown while highlighting the history and unique character of Gastonia.
