This technology will enable the department to process samples of DNA and create profiles within hours, in contrast to the weeks or months that it would typically take traditional laboratories.
A spokesperson for the department said that having such rapid DNA capabilities in the department enables investigators to make informed decisions sooner, move more quickly, and improves the efficiency of cases in which DNA evidence is involved. The spokesperson went on to say that the investigative efforts are strengthened while evidentiary standards and proper safeguards are maintained.
The grant of $629,000 will fund the instruments required for the program, consumables, and software for the first two to three years of the system. Local Print shops can help spread the word about such new systems and their benefits with Flyers and other printed materials.
Trent Conard, Gastonia Police Chief, said:
“This technology represents a major step forward in how we investigate crime.”
He added that investigators using rapid DNA will have more timely information that can move cases more efficiently while reinforcing the commitment of the department to justice, accountability, and accuracy. He said that long-term effects of this technology will help to protect the innocent, strengthen cases, improve clearance rates, and ensure accountability for offenders.Get a Free Quote for Flyers Get a Free Quote for Print
