Gastonia police update crime fighting capabilities

The Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has been unveiled by the Gastonia Police Department. This center is a state-of-the-art facility that supports officers in the field with real-time technology and intelligence and is designed to enhance public safety.

Funding in the amount of $963,000 from the federal Community Oriented Policing Services Office, a component of the United States Department of Justice, $100,000 from the general fund of the city of Gastonia, and $120,000 from funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. It is projected that it will cost $641,000 a year to operate and staff the center.

The center is part of a network across the country that connects over 6,000 business and community camera partnerships and 5,000 law enforcement agencies.

The RTCC in Gastonia includes 22 live Flock cameras, 21 Flock license plate readers, and 144 surveillance cameras downtown. The city plans to acquire its first drone responder in January 2026.

News of such new systems and their benefits for a community can be disseminated throughout a city with flyer printing.

He added that the integration of real-time data with cutting edge technology will provide officers with the tools they need to respond faster to crime, prevent crime, and make the community safer for everyone.
