Gastonia recognized as a tree city

The Tree City USA designation for 2022 has been given to the city of Gastonia. The Arbor Day Foundation has given the city a Growth Award for its commitment to the nurturing, planting, and celebration of trees.

The recognition was achieved by the city as it met the four requirements of the program, which are to have a tree care ordinance, maintain a tree department or board, host an annual Arbor Day proclamation and observance, and dedicate a forestry budget for the community of at least $2 per person.

Mayor Walker E. Reid said that this recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation is important to the goal of the city to become a greener community and expand its tree canopy across the city.

Being recognized for such awards often means that Posters and other printed materials need to be ordered from local Print shops. This means residents can become aware of recognitions and efforts to help improve a city.

Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation, Dan Lambe, said the trees being planted and maintained in Gastonia will ensure people in the years to come will be able to enjoy a better quality of life. He added that those who participate in this program bring people together and create a sense of pride in the community, whether by public education or volunteering.
