Gastonia canine reaches semifinals in hero dog awards

K9 Officer Bo of the Gastonia Police has been named as a semifinalist in the national Hero Dog Award competition of American Humane.

News of such achievements in a competition is often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.

Sergeant David Rowland, Bo’s handler in the Gastonia Police Department, expressed his surprise to have gotten this far in this competition. He explained that working in an urban environment is very challenging for a dog as it can be both scary and exciting. Bo joined the Gastonia police department last year and has had many successes in locating people who have been missing by using scents in some unique and notable situations.

Bo is 17 months old, is a Bloodhound and is originally from Kentucky. He joined the Gastonia Police Department in April 2023 and after rigorous training, began working as a Police K9 in October of that year.

Rowland said that Bo is one of hundreds of dogs who have been nominated for this award and is now one of four dogs in the semi-finals. Rowland said that should Bo earn this award it would mean a great deal to the department which has come to count on Bo for such cases. Rowland said that this would be a once in a lifetime experience and would make both he and the department very proud.
