What's Happening in Gastonia, NC…

Gastonia awarded funds for transportation connectivity project

An amount of $2m has been awarded to the city of Gastonia in funds from the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Grant Program.

The funds will be used to carry out a connectivity and feasibility study for Project CHANGE. This initiative will address the barriers to economic development and mobility in one of the communities in the city that is experiencing issues in transportation. It is just north of the railroad ditch that separates those living in the Highland community from downtown Gastonia.

The city will commit 50% of the grant, which is $200,000, towards the study, which will explore the feasibility of filling the ditch and creating a link between the Central Business District and the Highlands. The ditch would be transformed into an asset in the community, promote economic revitalization, and enhance access. Also emphasized in the project are improvements in connectivity with US Highway 74 and safety improvements along NC Highway 7.

More details about such projects and their benefits for a neighborhood are often provided with flyer printing.

Randi Gates, Director of Transportation for Gastonia, expressed his excitement about receiving this grant. He said that part of the vision of the city has been to cap the ditch, and it has been included in many documents, but it has been challenging to find the money needed to fund such a project.
