What's Happening in Durham, NC…

Usually, Labor Day is celebrated with an end of summer cook-out or a fireworks show, but for one Durham resident it means lots of golf for a good cause.

For the 7th year in a row, Karl Kimball has conducted his own Labor Day Marathon at Hillandale Golf Course in Durham. Kimball plays golf for 24 hours straight to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation.

The Foundation supplies education scholarships to fallen and wounded warriors’ children. Kimball explained, while being interviewed as he sped across the fairways, that a lot of children have been left minus a parent and deserve our help in getting a good education.

The success of any fundraiser depends to a large extent on how well it is advertised. Printing companies are adept at providing advice on how best to promote an event such as this one.

Using glow-in-the dark balls after dark, Kimball advanced to flag pins illuminated by glow sticks playing as quickly as possible because some of his donations hinged on how many holes he could complete. The first 18 holes were completed in 47 minutes at 7 under par.

For his use in the marathon, Kimball was outfitted with a modified golf cart donated by Club Car to decrease travel time across the course. Standard carts couldn’t move fast enough.

Kimball’s Labor Day Golf Marathon has, over the years, raised thousands of dollars for the Foundation’s scholarship fund.
