The 10th Annual Moody’s Mega Math Challenge was dominated by one Durham school, which took both the first and second place in the competition.
Two teams from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) of Durham, made it into the finals of the 2015 Mood’s Mega Math Challenge and each made an impressive showing. Five students prevailed over a total of 1,128 teams from around the country to take first place and won $20,000 in scholarship funds. Second place, along with $15,000 in scholarship money, went to the second NCSS team.
To have two teams from the same city even make it into the finals is extraordinary and will almost certainly be used in materials supplied to brochure printers to promote the city.
A national math modeling competition for high school students, the Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge for 2015 posed this query “Is college worth it?” On April 27, the teams from NCSSM provided their presentation detailing their cost-benefit analysis for seeking a college degree.
Among the models presented were the true cost of earning a degree and the resulting financial benefits of a STEM and non-STEM degree. Factors taken into consideration include the potential impact of a free two-year community college proposal made by President Obama and the impact on quality of life.
