The school has been educating children in Durham for 100 years. William Logan, or Dr. Logan as his students call him, has been working at the school for 19 years and this is the second time he has won this award, following his first triumph in 2014. Logan said that in the years between his awards, he has learned a lot more about being a good leader. Print shops can be consulted to present congratulations cards in situations like this.
Alysa Davis, who is a senior at Hillside, said that learning at Hillside High is a supportive and fun experience. When asked to give more details about the environment at the school, she said to The News & Observer:
“It’s just a different environment over here than any other high school, like we have sororities and fraternities. We have all these different clubs. We have a great theater program. Our arts program is amazing.”
Hillside High’s graduation rates have consistently been higher than the district’s average under Logan’s leadership, with the school’s college acceptance rate sitting at about 77%. Many students have gained scholarships while learning under Logan, with students having earned more than $100 million worth of scholarships during his tenure. The competition for scholarships is so intense that new classes are striving to outperform the students that came before them.
