Rochester event puts chess brains to the test

A three-day event in mid-July is showcasing a popular and brainy game to Rochester locals.

The Rochester Chess Festival is an event that includes several major competitions, including the Simultaneous Chess Exhibition, the Rochester Open, and the Midwest Regional Championship for Women & Girls. The Minnesota State Chess Association (MSCA) has teamed up with Rochester Chess to host the festival.

Registration for all three contests is available through the website for Minnesota Chess. The simultaneous competition has an entry price of $10, which is to be paid at the event. The other two contests have increasing registration costs as the date of the festival nears. Starting on July 1st, the prices are either $70, $80, or $100 depending on player level. On July 18, these values go up to $80, $90, and $110. At the event, the cost will be $90, $100, and $120.

Some of the sections are open to US Chess-registered players and unregistered players, while a few are specifically for those who are registered. Details on registering for a membership can be found on the same page as the spot to sign up for one of the contests. Prizes are available in the form of cash and trophies.

Players are asked to provide their own chess sets and clocks. The event is being held inside the Mayo Civic Center. Flyer printing is a popular promotion technique for such competitions.

The festival will run between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm on July 19 and 20, with the simultaneous contest starting at 7:00 pm on July 18.
