Minneapolis says yearly farewell to Monarchs

In early September, the 11th Annual Festival de la Monarca or Monarch Festival will commemorate the 2,300-mile Minnesota-to-Mexico migration of Monarch butterflies. Admission and all activities will be free.

Over 15 conservation exhibitors such as El Valor, Bell Museum and Minnesota Association for Environmental Education will have displays and lectures on topics such as, monarch habitat conservation and protection, habitat loss, threats to pollinators, and plants native to Minnesota.

In the Naturescape Garden, groups of five or six guests at a time will get the opportunity to tag live butterflies and release them. Also, in the Education tent, guests will learn about the monarch’s life stages, North America’s plan for monarch butterfly protection, play a Monarch migration game and Monarch bingo and jeopardy. Talks will be given on what monarch need to survive here in Minnesota, and plants monarchs love will be available for purchase.

Kids from 0 to 12 years old are invited to join in the Costume Parade, which will start at 11:00 am. The route will take the children around the Festival grounds and back to the stage. Parents usually bring cameras to take pictures of their little ones at events such as this. The photos can be taken to nearby Print shops for duplicates for relatives.

The Monarch Festival will be Saturday, September 7th at Lake Nokomis, 49th Street and Woodlawn Blvd. from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
