Minneapolis all set for winter festival

Minneapolis is gearing up for its annual City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival at the end of the month.

On the first day, a cross-country City of Lakes Classic 30k Marathon will take skiers on an urban course through woods and parkways on the park trailhead. The City of Lakes Classic 31k, Classic Ski Loppet, 31k Skate Ski Loppet, 10k Ski Tour, 20k Classic Ski, and a 20k Puoli (mid-distant) Loppet will take place, along with kubb (a Swedish lawn game a little like bocce ball) and 3k, 5k and 10k Skijoring. Other events will include Next Generation Ski 1k, 2k, 3k, and 10k and a Ski-Orienteering Loppet (an outdoor scavenger hunt using compass and map).

On day two, there will be a 30k Marathon, 20k and 10k Freestyle Skate Skis, 10k Snowshoe Loppet, and a 10k Classic Ski Tour. That evening, more than 1,200 glowing luminaries will line a winter walk along the lake. Giant ice sculptures, an ice pyramid, and Luminary Hall with its artistic passageway of lighted ice structures will be part of the Luminary Loppet. Hot cocoa, fire dancers, and an afterparty with food trucks and music will end the evening.

City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival will take place Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1 at 1221 Theodore Wirth Park. Events like this often get their paper products like race bibs and course markers printed at local Print shops.
