Minneapolis goes global for 30th anniversary

The 10th annual Global Roots Festival will be kicking off the 30th anniversary season of the Cedar Cultural Center in mid-September. This free event will be an opportunity for our area to hear upcoming vocal artists from around the globe.

The festival will begin with performances by musician Aar Maanta, the Cedar’s current Artist in Residence. He will be sharing the program with Hoven Droven, a classic Swedish Folk-rock group.

On Sunday, the Swedish Institute will offer discussions and free films while the plaza at the Cedar will have local artists performing nightly on the Local Roots Stage.

The third evening will be free performances by Aynur, a Kurdish vocalist and Sona Jobarteh singing West African Kora. The following evening the Columbian and Ecuadorian marimba-centered groups, Rio Mira will take the stage along with the Zhou Family Band- an East-Chinese percussion and wind ensemble.

Pictures taken during the festival could go to Stationery printers to be made into colorful personal Stationery.

The festival will end with an evening with Deigres a group that performs French, Guadeloupean music and New Orleans blues. The Lemon Bucket Orkestra - a Balkan brass band that plays Toronto-based punk - will also perform that evening. This will be a standing show.

The 10 Annual Global Roots Festival is slated for Saturday, September 15th through Wednesday, September 19th at the Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Avenue S. Performances will be from 7:30 pm until 10:30 each night. Although free, reservations are encouraged.
