Three finalists for the Teacher of the Year award for 2015–2016 have been named, and they are from the Montgomery County public school district in which Gaithersburg is located. The Marian Greenblatt Education Fund has also awarded them the Veteran Teacher Award.
Josephine Luster, a teacher for grade five in the Highly Gifted Center at the Chevy Chase Elementary School, is one of the finalists. She is involved in administering afterschool activities, mentoring new teachers, and leading the cheerleading and homework clubs.
Another finalist is Jill Rapsen, a teacher in grade six at the Ridgeview Middle School in Gaithersburg, who also instructs other teachers in the district on how to use the new Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education in their classrooms.
The third finalist is Joseph Gannon, Jr., a social studies teacher at Damascus High School. The World History Advanced Placement and Economics programs at the school were started by him.
Completing the trio is Ginger Berry, a math teacher at Argyle Middle School in Silver Spring, who is being honored as the Rising Star Teacher of the Year for 2015.
On Tuesday, April 21, these teachers and other employees of the district were honored at the annual Champions for Children Awards Celebration at The Fillmore Silver Spring. The district may use a Print company in the district to create a flyer that promotes the accomplishments of these teachers.
