Schoolboard votes on reopening plan

The Anne Arundel County schoolboard has voted in favor of implementing a hybrid learning system.

Students in Crofton could be using this new system as early as March, but whether the plan will be used as proposed depends on whether Superintendent George Arlotto decides to allow small groups of students to start learning on campus in the near future. A news release shows that English students and special needs students will be included in the first groups allowed to go back.

The recent vote also makes changes to a previous plan. The board had hoped to use the hybrid learning system in elementary schools when the semester started on February 2, but decided that the return should be delayed by about a month. The board members convinced Arlotto to provide them with a timeline for how the reopening plan will proceed. They hope to be given an update on the new plans by February 17. Arlotto is expected to identify the students who may face challenges with virtual learning and make special exceptions for them.

The school system is also working closely with the county health department to create a vaccination schedule for the school system’s employees. According to Governor Logan, K-12 teachers and education staff are included in the Phase 1b of the vaccination schedule.
