School sports programs set to restart

State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon, along with Governor Larry Hogan, has announced that state schools officially have the approval to start their sports programs.

Practice sessions can start on next Wednesday, October 7 and competitive matches will start on October 27 in cities such as Crofton. The schools will need to follow guidelines set out by the Code of Maryland Regulations, Guidance for Youth Sports, and the Maryland Department of Health Best Practices. It will be positive news to supporters of live sports, sometimes use printing services to back their teams on the field.

According to the new plan, the last day for competitive matches in the fall season is December 12. Golfers will be able to start competing on October 7. The seasons for fall and spring sports will be adjusted as well. Winter sports will start their practice sessions on December 14 and spring sports will begin practice sessions on January 4, 2021.

Dr. Salmon added:

“High school sports and competition are deeply rooted in the fabric of our schools and communities. The steps taken today are directly related to the need of our students to be active and engaged for their physical, social, and emotional well-being.”

State officials would prefer that schools start their sports programs soon, but those who want to wait can adopt the Second Semester Plan instead. The decision to restart sports programs was made after meetings were held between all 24 of the state’s superintendents along with the Board of Education, parents, and other stakeholders.
