Research clinic demonstrates benefits of urban farming

Urban farming practices will be featured at an open house of the University of Maryland Anne Arundel County Extension near Crofton.

The Ann Arundel Extension office operates the Urban Farming Research Clinic and offers information and education to promote this form of agriculture.

Growing food and providing it to local customers within and near cities is considered urban agriculture. It is a popular form of farming which includes a variety of food production methods and Forms, such as backyard chickens, empty lot gardens and hydroponics. Urban farming allows growers to profit from production in a smaller area and cuts the cost of food transportation.

In addition to the research clinic, the university extension program presents workshops and information sessions on topics such as land access, pest management, and business planning as they relate to urban farming. It also features a master gardener program in which trained volunteers reach out to educate residents about sustainable growing.

The Anne Arundel County Extension open house will provide the public with a chance to visit the urban farm, walk through a demonstration garden and meet the instructors. This year, the research clinic's focus is on beekeeping, hops, wine grapes, berries, corn and small scale production of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The open house is free and will feature youth activities and giveaways. For gatherings such as this, event planners often have educational materials created by professional Print shops.

The public is invited to visit August 23, 2024 from 1-4 pm at 97 Dairy Lane, Gambrills, just north of Crofton.
