Name chosen for new school building

Hundreds of people from the local community held a meeting with the principal of Crofton’s newest high school in order to come up with a name for the newly constructed building. This was a good opportunity for people to have a say in the name that will appear on the school’s Logo Design.

Despite the high number of options, the community overwhelmingly decided on calling the school ‘Crofton High School’.

The meeting was attended by parents, community members, and school officials. They were given a list with 75 names to choose from. The list of proposed names included:

- Alex Haley High School,
- Aris T. Allen High School,
- Cardinal High School,
- Crofton Park High School,
- Greater Crofton High School,
- Whites Hall High School.

In one round of voting, 80% of the 402 people who cast votes chose Crofton High School. School officials will forward the selection to the board of education for the name to be formalized. James Stoddard High School came second in the poll with 34 votes. In total, 17 other options received at least one vote.

The new building is the first new addition to the Anne Arundel County Public School’s system in four decades. It cost $135m to build and will open for ninth and tenth graders in September 2020. The school will accommodate a new grade every year until 2022.
