Master Gardeners get 2020 season underway

The Master Gardener 2020 series of free gardening events kicked off with the Seed Swap Workshop at the Odenton library near Crofton.

More than 100 people turned up for the January 25 event, where the tables were covered with all kinds of seeds, including herbs, flowers, vegetables, and native plants. Many of the seeds were donations from local businesses and seed companies. Donations such as these can be used as Promotional Products.

The Master Garden events also educate people on how to take care of their gardens and eliminate pests and weeds. For example, the Master Gardeners suggest using row covers to keep insects away. They also pointed out that row covers cannot be used with pollinator plants such as squash. Shema, one of the Master Gardeners, said that:

“What we do as Master Gardeners is try to educate people. There are a lot of folks now who are interested in growing their own food. It’s fun, especially for people with little kids.”

Several other workshops are scheduled for the rest of the year. One of the most popular of them is the “Ask a Gardener” workshop, which will be running every Saturday from the middle of April. Experienced gardeners and newbies alike are invited to participate in tending the community garden in Gambrills.

The next event on the list is a workshop on sprouting seeds in indoors on Saturday, February 29 at Deale Library.
