Crofton residents, along with all other wage-earners in Maryland, recently got some good news concerning when their individual state income tax will be due.
Comptroller Peter Franchot recently announced that the new deadline for individuals to file and pay taxes is July 15, 2022. According to Franchot the reason for the extension is to ease the financial strain on taxpayers as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will make the third year in a row that the filing and payment deadline has been extended by three months by the comptroller’s office. In each of the last two years, approximately 600,000 taxpayers have benefited from the extensions, giving them what amounted to a combined interest-free loan of about $1.8bn and allowing them more leeway in handling their finances.
Crofton residents will not need to make an extension request to put off their state taxes until July. An automatic extension will be granted to all Maryland filers regardless of whether they are residents of the state or not.
Those taxpayers anticipating a refund, however, may not wish to wait to file their 2021 Maryland income tax return.
