Crofton helps mark 40 years of Relay for Life

Cancer survivors, caregivers and supporters will participate in the annual Relay for Life event near Crofton next month.

Presented by the American Cancer Society, the well-known fundraising and awareness event is held in support of those affected by all Forms of cancer and has taken place in communities around the world since 1985. That year, Gordy Klatt of Tacoma, Washington, collected pledges as he ran and walked over 80 miles in 24 hours, and the event was born.

This year’s theme of the relay is 40 Years of Impact, highlighting the four decades over which it has brought people together to remember loved ones and take a stand against cancer.

Survivors will walk the first lap of the day before being joined by caregivers, supporters, and other members of the community who participate in a team relay-style format. Spectators are asked to line the track for the starting laps and cheer on the walkers. To boost the crowd and keep the energy levels high, local entertainers will be performing. Costumes and noisemakers are encouraged. Organizers of similar events often use Print shops for banner printing to attract crowds.

At dusk, the relay course will light up with decorated handmade paper lanterns, and a short ceremony will be held in honor and memory of those lives who have been lost to the disease.

This year, the local organizers have also added a fun run to the activities, as well as a health and wellness element.

The Relay for Life will be held at Crofton High School in Gambrills on Friday, May 30 beginning at 5:00 pm.
