Crofton residents will no doubt notice plenty of construction going on at the airport, known for its black, white, and red Logo Design. A proposed 27-acre site will encompass a hangar large enough to hold three Boeing 737s and apron space to handle eight Southwest Airlines jets, as well as associated workshop and associated office space. Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford chaired the Board that approved a lease agreement and construction contract of $44.6m to construct and operate the facility, while also developing the site.
Lt. Governor Rutherford said in a press release on the subject:
"This would be another key maintenance facility for Southwest Airlines, and enhances an established long term and strategic relationship. Our administration continues to support BWI as a major transportation hub, as well as a catalyst for tourism, trade, and economic development."
The new maintenance facility is projected to cost around $135m with about a $90m investment from the airline included in that amount. It will be Southwest Airlines’ first maintenance facility in the Northeastern US.
Approximately 70% of BWI’s passenger traffic is serviced by Southwest Airlines. The airline says that it has over 4,000 employees of Southwest, including maintenance and technical personnel at BWI.
