Special funds for housing awarded to Malden

A Housing Choice Grant in the amount of $50,000 has been awarded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the city of Malden to develop a proposal for multifamily zoning.

The plan is for this funding to further the economic and housing development goals for the city and comply with Multifamily Zoning Requirement for MBTA Communities.

The Housing Choice Grant program is a grant program of a competitive nature that gives municipalities which have produced a substantial number of housing units in the past five years and have established best practice to encourage the development of housing a Housing Choice Designation.

Part of the Community One Stop for Growth program, this grant streamlines the process for developing municipal grant proposals that are related to planning and zoning, site preparation, community capacity building, infrastructure, and building construction. Cities such as this one often employ local print shops to inform residents of such funding and their benefits for a city.

Gary Christenson, mayor of Malden, said that the grant will enable the city to explore zoning options that comply with the requirements of the MBTA communities to determine how Malden can move forward in this regard. He added that without these funds, it would not be possible to carry out the needed technical analysis and public engagement so that solutions can be developed that enrich the community.
