Awards for an annual art competition designed to provide uplifting social messaging have been given to students from Malden and Medford High Schools.

Local Print shops can help spread the news of such accomplishments throughout a school community with mailers, Flyers, and other printed materials.

There were 80 submissions from local students to the Teen Perspectives Art and Essay Contest, which is in its seventh year. The theme of this year’s contest was “How My Community Benefits from Immigration.” The Malden Cultural Council primarily funds this contest. The non-profit organization, the Immigration and Learning Center on Main Street, focuses on courses in English for those who speak other languages.

Sophia Zhang, a student at Malden High, was awarded third place in the art category. Kelly Ye, another student at Malden High School, won third place in the essay category. A panel of 13 judges from various backgrounds decided which submissions were the winners.

Ye wrote about how a trip to China made her want to learn more about her heritage and to fully embrace it, as second-generation immigrants, like herself, sometimes lose connections with their motherland and its languages and cultures.

Gary Christenson, mayor of Malden, said that coming together to celebrate such winners give an opportunity to learn, share, and grow from one another. He added how such contests highlight what students do for the city and neighboring communities.
