What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Malden awarded funds for investment in city

Grants have been awarded to the city of Malden through two programs under the Community One Stop for Growth of the Commonwealth.

The first is a grant of $460,000 from the MassWorks Infrastructure Program for the redesign of Commercial Street. These finds will enable the city to study a wide range of improvements to the streetscape of Commercial Street that will improve the prospects of the corridor for new growth and economic development opportunities as well as traffic circulation. Among the items to be studied will be improvements to intersections, sidewalks, lighting, traffic signals, and tree plantings.

The second grant is an award through the Massachusetts Vacant Storefront Program. The city will have access to refundable tax credits in 2026 worth $50,000 to businesses that move into storefronts in Malden that are vacant.

Flyer printing is an effective way to make such grants and their benefits known throughout the city.

Mayor Gary Christenson thanked the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for their investments in the city at a critical time for Malden. He said that the best way that the city can advance through its tight fiscal environment is to focus on investment, new growth, and economic development and these grants will help the city to reach those goals.

The State’s Executive Office for Economic Development administers the Vacant Storefront Program and the MassWorks Infrastructure Program.
