The Immigrant Learning Center (ILC) in Malden is holding its fifth annual Teen Perspectives Contest and is inviting local teenagers to display their cultural knowledge and artistic skills.
Interested high school students from Everett, Medford, and Malden are being asked by the ILC to submit original essays or artwork based on the theme of how immigration benefits the community. The first, second, and third place winners and honorable mentions in each category will be awarded cash prizes.
Gerard Tannetta, Director of History and the Arts at Malden Public Schools, said that the ILC has been a kind and munificent partner of Malden High School and their contest has become an annual tradition at the school. Tannetta added that Malden has the most diverse high school in the state and is always looking for ways to honor the diverse identities and cultures of its students. Tannetta commented that this contest provides an ideal opportunity for students to have their voices heard and to enable them to tell their stories through essays, videos, and the arts.
Contests like this can be promoted throughout a city and neighboring school districts with poster printing.
Submissions for the contest are due Monday February 9 and winners will be announced on Monday March 23. There will be an award ceremony for the winners at Malden High School on Wednesday April 15.
