What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Pioneer award bestowed on third-grader

Damian Milton of Malden was recently presented the Richard A. LaPierre Pioneer Award for 2015 by Easter Seals.

According to the President of Easter Seals, Paul Medeiros, this award is given to those with disabilities who are not afraid to try new things and embody a spirit of triumph and resilience. It was named for the pioneering spirit that was demonstrated by Richard A. LaPierre, a former President of Easter Seals.

Damian attends the Linden STEAM Academy in Malden and is in the third grade. He has cerebral palsy, which makes it difficult for him to perform precise movements or speak, and to gain weight. Physical therapists are provided by Easter Seals to work closely with Damian and those at his school to increase his access to his surroundings and his mobility.

His mother, Jessica Milton, said that she and her husband, John, were very impressed that Damian was chosen for this award. She added that there are many children with disabilities in Massachusetts and this award has made Damian proud to be acknowledged for all the hard work he does to overcome his disability.

Professional poster printing could be used by the school to make his classmates and the community aware of the award and what it means to Damian, his family, and the rest of the school community.
