What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Malden youth involved in special cultural performance

Students from the Malden YMCA Leader Corps, along with Wanntha Sim Chanhdymany, Site Director for the Malden YMCA, and Lynn Youth Leaders were recently guest performers at the Culture Show of the Boston College South East Asian Student’s Association (SEASA).

The Cambodian Scarf Dance was one of the performances. This dance features the ways that the karma or scarf is used in the country as it has been part of the culture of Cambodia for many years. After the more traditional dance, the performers employed the scarf in more modern dances such as pop, hip hop, and the break dance. Brochure printing can be used to create programs that explain such dances and other performances as a way to educate audiences about different cultures.

Miranda Cheng and Angela Truong, leaders of the Malden YMCA; Sean Dam and Rayya Chek, leaders from Lynn Youth; and Chanhdymany were the guest performers at the show.

The YMCA Leader Corps is based out of Malden High School and provides volunteer services to the community. It works with the Malden YMCA to encourage youth to be more socially engaged.

SEASA is a student-run club at Boston College whose goal is to share the culture of Southeast Asia with the greater Boston College community. This culture show is an annual event of the club and their largest event of the year.
