Malden to undergo study of major thoroughfare

A grant from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will enable the city of Malden to develop an economic development and land use plan for the Broadway Corridor, also known as Route 99.

The Malden Redevelopment Authority and the city have selected the BSC Group, a planning firm, which will work over the next summer to develop the plan.

Part of the plan will include a study of existing economic and physical conditions of the corridor and projections of impacts from gaming facility-driven economic opportunities on residents, infrastructure, transportation, safety, and as well as recommendations for creation and retention of jobs, economic development, and land use.

The plan will address three segments of the corridor:

• The commercial and retail aspects of the Broadway Plaza and the surrounding area
• The stretch of the residential neighborhood in the middle section with smaller commercial, personal services
• The larger commercial properties near the line with Melrose

Public comment on the plan is encouraged and can be done through an online survey or using printing services.

The city believes that such public improvements can encourage private investment in addition to making the area more aesthetically pleasing. There is the potential to allow for a wider range of the business zone along the corridor, upgrade traffic infrastructures and make signal and signage improvements, and create linkages to the Northern Strand Community Trail bike path.
