Malden to be part of air monitoring study

The regional Mystic River Watershed Association has received a grant of close to $500,000 which will go towards the monitoring of air quality in locations in Malden, Everett, East Boston, and Charlestown.

These monitoring activities will gather data that will reduce exposure to transportation-related particulates that may be harmful, inform decision-making around transportation infrastructure, and increase the awareness of the community about the air. Local printing services can help in spreading such awareness with the creation of flyers and brochures with more details about such plans.

These communities were selected by the Watershed Association because there is limited data on the local air quality and disproportionate burdens from air pollution and disease related to transportation. Patrick Herron, Executive Director of the Association, said that the organization uses a network of scientists who are volunteers and develop data which can inform actions, track environmental conditions, and work with partners in the community toward restored habitats, clean water, and a healthy environment for everyone. He expressed his excitement about continuing their efforts of engaging communities to understand and identify solutions to the pollutants in the environment and help protect public health.

A member from Tufts University, along with a Community Advisory Board of 12 people, will design studies for monitoring air quality and will set up stationary monitors later this spring in selected communities.
