What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Malden road improvements ready for the public

Several updates to Florence Street in Malden are now completed to facilitate traffic for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Part of the Shared Streets and Spaces program from the state, which provided a grant of $211,715 towards the project, these changes include improved pedestrian crossings, addition of bicycle lanes, and shared bus-bicycle lanes to improve access. There is a buffered bike lane that goes outbound towards Washington Street and a shared bus-bike lane that goes toward the Malden Center Station. Local printing services are often used to help spread the word about such road improvements using flyers.

Stephanie Pollack, CEO and Transportation Secretary, said that these improvements to the streets show how public space can be shared so that all travelers benefit. She extended her thanks to the city officials of Malden who were able to make this project possible, noting that the important last mile for people bicycling and walking – as well as those on buses between the Orange Line station, Malden Center, and other destinations – will now be much easier to travel.

Gary Christenson, mayor of Malden, said that the city is doing everything it can to support residents at this time. He added that an important part of the city’s responsibility is to upgrade bike safety, create more open space for small businesses, and improve the reliability of bus service.
