Malden library offers more than books to borrow
There is now an opportunity for patrons of the Malden Public Library to check more than books with the opening of the Library of Things.
The goal of this initiative is to enable people to borrow a wide range of items rather than owning them to conserve resources and reduce waste. Examples of items include a metal detector, a stud finder, a photo scanner, and snowshoes with poles. People can pick up such items at the library on Salem Street and reserve them for up to two weeks.
The Library said that rather than buying and owning items that people do not use often, they can now check them out with a library card. The Library added that this promotes sustainability and provides residents with access to a variety of items that they may need for recreational activities or home projects. Flyer printing is often used to promote such initiatives and items that may be available for borrowing.
Patrons of the Library can also place a hold or schedule a pickup at the Library of Things. The first time someone borrows an item, they will be required to sign a waiver and borrower's agreement.
The Library is also looking for donations to its new collection such as crafting supplies, supplies for bikes such a bike repair kit, cooking items that are compact and easy to clean, and items for home improvement.
