Malden high school principal to receive top recognition

The Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association recently selected Dana Brown, principal of Malden High School, as Massachusetts Principal of the Year.

According to the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association, those principals who foster a culture where decision-making is a collaboration among members of the school community, support a safe environment for learning, and demonstrate exemplary skills in leadership in instruction are those who are recognized for this award.

The Association points out that Brown and the Malden High School team have demonstrated their ability to meet all three requirements by personalizing the learning of each student at the school, which has a student body of over 1,800 students. Course offerings have been expanded, flexible hours have been added and on-line learning opportunities created.

Students are now able to enroll in courses at Bunker Hill Community College to get an early start on their education after high school and the Alternative School program was moved to the main school building. A program for at-risk students, this change has decreased the number of discipline referrals and increased participation in extracurricular activities and graduation rates.

The school might want to advertise this achievement of its principal by hiring a local print company to create banners and other materials promoting this award.

Brown will receive the award next month at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center at the annual Leadership Institute of the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association.
