Malden City Council learns of road repair progress

Stephen O’Neill of the engineering firm Hayner/Swanson, Inc. (HSI) recently met with the Malden City Council to provide updates on major road construction projects in the city.

Wicked Local Malden reports that when CDM Smith was hired last year to replace 100-year-old pipes, the company ran over budget and behind schedule, and left many streets in the city disturbed and needing repaving. HSI was brought on board to repair the roads as the work on the water pipe replacement was halted.

Councilor Neal Anderson commented that these unpaved roads have been a constant problem for the city.

O’Neill told the Council that 16 streets, across a total of 9,000 linear feet, have so far been repaired, with an additional 24 roads, spanning about 20,000 linear feet, to be finished next year. This will leave about 21 streets from the water main project. O’Neill said design work is underway on these streets and repairs are expected to be completed by 2019. The sidewalks along these streets are also being replaced.

Councilor Debbie DeMaria commented that having these streets repaved is giving a new look to the city and providing a firm foundation for traffic.

Restoration projects often call for the help of poster printing companies the city so people walking and driving through the streets will be kept abreast of the progress.
