Science facility reopens in Lowell

Perry Hall, which has been shut down for 18 months while $50m worth of renovations were made, reopened during winter intersession, with faculty members moving lab equipment into the new facility.

Francis College of Engineering faculty members undertook the task of moving the lab equipment into the new UMass Lowell facility, which is now state-of-the-art. There are eight new laboratories in Perry Hall; five for research and three for teaching. The labs are used to study clean energy; biomanufacturing; and environmental, chemical, and biomedical engineering. There are also spaces dedicated as co-location areas, which will allow the university to increase the partnerships it undertakes with industry.

There are also four conference rooms, three classrooms, and a number of open collaboration areas featuring comfortable, modern furniture and whiteboards throughout the building, which is four stories tall. When institutions make improvements like this, they can use brochure printing to create informative Booklets for prospective students, highlighting the changes.

Perry Hall opened its doors in 1952, and was showing its age, first because of deferred maintenance, and also because of a fire in 2012 that closed the fourth floor. In order to bring the building up to date, the original 47,825 structure was gutted, and an additional 5,600 square feet added. Faculty members are said to be particularly pleased by having dedicated rooms for them to conduct experiments.

There will be a formal ribbon cutting in April.
