Oprah coming to Lowell

Iconic talk show host Oprah Winfrey will be in Lowell this week, speaking at UMass as part of the Lowell’s Chancellor Speaker Series at the university.

The speaker series is an annual event, and Winfrey is the third celebrity to take part, following horror writer Stephen King and actor Meryl Streep.

Jacquie Moloney, UMass Lowell Chancellor, is the host for the evening, and will interview Winfrey on stage, before a live audience. Winfrey is an actress, author, producer, and most famously a talk show host, and is widely-known for her philanthropic acts. Moloney said it is her hope that Winfrey will bring hope to the audience members, especially those students who have humble origins.

Winfrey’s appearance, like those of King and Streep, is a fundraiser for scholarships for students attending UMass. King’s appearance brought in over $100,000, while Streep’s talk resulted in raising over $230,000. Moloney said she hopes that Oprah’s appearance, which has been dubbed ‘A Conversation with Oprah Winfrey’, will bring in $1m.

UMass Lowell will present an honorary doctorate of humane letters, the highest honor the institution can offer, to Winfrey. Organizers of events such as this might work with a banner printing company to create colorful, appropriate Banners to decorate the venue.

Winfrey is set to appear tomorrow, November 15, at the Tsongas Center at the university, at 7:00 pm. Further information can be found on the venue’s website.
