Lowell looks for input on new high school

The city of Lowell recently held a public forum to discuss options for a new high school.

A range of building options is being considered by the planners of the project. One would involve some basic repairs, another would be renovations with additions of various sizes, and a third would be new construction. Temporary classroom space and space for physical education would be needed for the renovation scenarios.

The old wing along Kirk Street would be part of renovation scheme and a new building would be added on the other side of the Merrimack Canal. Sites for new construction would be either LeBlanc Park or Cawley Stadium.

A total of 3,520 students would need to be accommodated at the new school. Cost estimates for basic repairs would be around $231m, while costs for renovating and expanding the current building would run from $300m to $330m.

Manager of the project, Mary Ann Williams, said that planners have no preference for the direction of the project.

The city might want to use Mailing services to send a flyer or other such document to residents with more information about the various options, so they can offer valuable input to the final decision. The location will be selected in May at which time the Massachusetts School Building Authority will receive plans and reimburse the city for most of the building costs.
