Community workshop to host spindle class for members

In October, Lowell Makes will host beginner spindle-turning class for members who would like to learn the craft.

Lowell Makes, Inc. is a non-profit community workshop and shared crafting laboratory made up of a group of artists, makers, engineers, and thinkers. The organization’s mission is to provide a welcoming space where both individual and community projects can flourish. October’s spindle-turning class will provide members with the tools and resources needed to learn new skills and embark on new hobbies.

There are no prerequisites to attend the workshop except current membership at Lowell Makes. The class will teach attendees the fundamentals of spindle-turning and how to use carbide-tipped tools, which will enable participants to work independently in the lathe shop.

Some topics of lathe turning that will be discussed include explaining lathe parts and purpose, reviewing RPM speed selection, and checking lathe alignment. Students will learn to find the center, turn a cylinder, and smooth to pre-sand finish to create a shaped spindle.

Such hands-on workshops often utilize printed training materials as well and may find brochure printing services helpful.

The Lowell Makes beginner spindle-turning workshop is scheduled for October 9 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Registration cost is $60, with a $5 materials fee at the beginning of the class. It will take place at 130 Western Avenue, Lowell.
