Walk and run raises funds for scholarships

The 5K Memorial Road Race for Officer Thomas J. Giunta is coming to Fall River, with a new location and a different route. This will be the 22nd year of the race.

According to race coordinator Derek Pacheco, the race has usually been held downtown, but the closure Bank Street Armory, where runners previously registered, has led to a change of scene. The new race headquarters will be the Fire Department Headquarters Building. A new route will have people starting in the area of Airport Road, going through Bank Street and High Street, and then returning to the Elks where the after-race party is held.

The Thomas J. Giunta Memorial Trust Scholarship is the beneficiary of the race. The scholarship was established soon after the police officer from Fall River lost his life on duty in August 1994. Since then, the scholarship has provided considerable funding for scholarships for continuing education and programs for public safety organizations and students in the region.

The race will be on Sunday, April 3 with registration from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and the run/walk beginning at 12:10 pm. A commemorative long sleeve T-shirt, for which a Print company can provide the Logo Design as well as for awards and other materials that are used during the event, is included in the entry fee of $25.
