New principal appointed at Fall River elementary school

Kevin Bates has been appointed as the next principal of the Carlton M. Viveiros Elementary School in Fall River.

In this role, he will oversee the daily operations of the school while continuing to focus on strong instructional leadership, high expectations, and building a positive and supportive school culture for staff and students. Such appointments often call for the printing of new Business Cards.

Bates first joined the Fall River Public Schools district in 2012 as a special education teacher at B.M.C. Durfee High School through Teach For America. Since then, he has held multiple leadership roles in the district, bringing more than 15 years of experience in education to the position.

He has been Matthew J. Kuss Middle School’s vice principal since 2024, where he played a role in strengthening the school culture, student support systems, and instructional practices. He developed a Restorative Justice Center and created initiatives focused on achievement, accountability, and student engagement.

Describing Bates as “student-centered” and “collaborative,” Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Smith said that his previous experience as vice principal at the school, combined with his leadership at Kuss, makes him the ideal person to lead one of the district’s biggest elementary schools. She expressed her excitement to welcome him back to the school.

Bates will start his new position on Wednesday, July 1.
