Social-emotional learning is focus for regional conference

The Southcoast Education Summit was recently held at the Somerset Berkley Regional High School, where over 220 educators from the region spent the day in workshops focusing on the topic of social-emotional learning.

The Education Committee of the Bristol County Chamber of Commerce spearheaded the Summit. Nick Christ, CEO of BayCoast Bank, led the committee, which consisted of curriculum directors, area school superintendents, and representatives from the Fall River Educators Association, the Carney Family Foundation, BayCoast Bank, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

Guest speakers included Thomas Quinn, Bristol County District Attorney, and Jessica Minahan, a behavior analyst, special educator, author, and consultant to many schools around the world. Funding from Chamber Foundation and the main sponsor, BayCoast Bank, enabled Minahan to present at the conference.

Matt Malone, Superintendent of Schools for Fall River, said the result of the Summit was to develop collaboration among the attendees, so that the businesses and the schools in the region would work towards a common goal. Malone added that the collaborative effort of the committee enabled Minahan to be the keynote speaker, who helps schools to focus on a difficult subject, and started the day on a positive and enthusiastic note.
