Scholarships available for students in Fall River

Applications by students for the Fall River Chapter of the Prince Henry Society have been extended until next month.

Students who are eligible to apply to the Society need to be graduates of B.M.C. Durfee, Bishop Connolly, Atlantis Charter School, and several other high schools in the area and be of Portuguese descent. Students also need to submit letters of recommendation, financial statements, and transcripts as well write an essay about the how their culture has influenced their lives.

Guidance counselors accept the applications, which are then reviewed by members of the committee. A date is yet to be determined for announcement of the recipients of the scholarships. Members of the community can also establish scholarships in memory of a loved one or in their family’s name by donating $1,000. This amount will provide a scholarship for one year.

Those who live the Fall River area and attend schools outside of the district need to contact the Taunton or New Bedford Chapters to determine their eligibility as their applications as well as their deadlines are different.

Applications, which may be printed by Print shops in the area, are available from Alexandra’s Boutique in Fall River, Rockland Trust in Somerset, St. Anthony of Padua Credit Union, and students’ high school guidance counselor.

Applications will be accepted for Fall River students until June 1.
