Historic store to hold bicentennial festivities

The 200th anniversary of the Luther Store will be celebrated by the Historical Society of Swansea this year, with a number of open houses and other activities that are still in the planning stages.

These celebrations are of such significance to those in the local area that those in the surrounding communities such as Fall River will no doubt want to participate in the festivities.

According to President of the Historical Society, Carl Becker, although some have said it opened as early as 1811 and others as late as 1818, there is sufficient historical evidence to indicate that the year was 1815.

With a strategic location at the intersection of Pearse Road, Warren Road, and Maple Avenue, the Luther Store was a primary supply business on a main road between Rhode Island and the cities of Fall River and New Bedford to the east.

Tours are regularly held on Sundays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm during July and August, but three special open houses are being held for the anniversary celebration. These will be from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on July 12, from noon to 5:00 pm on September 27, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on October 17.

Most likely, the Historical Society is turning to a variety of Print companies to help with creating promotional materials for the celebration, and to generate enthusiasm for joining the organization.
