USA Today has nominated the ships at Battleship Cove in Fall River to be entered in the 10 Best Reader’s Choice travel awards contest.
The ships came in at number 10 in the publication’s choice of the top 20 US museum ships, and locals can cast their vote to see if they can improve on that ranking.
There are three ships at Battleship Cove—the Lionfish submarine, destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy, and the Battleship Massachusetts—but they are a single nomination in this contest as the same entity runs all three ships.
Executive Director of Battleship Cove, Brad King, said that this will be a great boost for the attraction and for Fall River itself.
There are 188 historic vessels that are members of the Historic Naval Ships Association and the editors of the 10 Best of USA Today chose 20 ships for the contest. Other nominees against which Battleship Cove is competing include the USS Constitution in Boston, the USS Iowa in Los Angeles, and the USS Missouri in Honolulu, as well as other submarines, destroyers and aircraft carriers.
Voting ends on July 18, and the winners will be announced around midday on June 22. Voting is done online but King might want to consider using Flyers to hand out in the community with more information about Battleship Cove and how people can vote.
