The new interim police chief of the Fall River Police Department will be Captain Kelly Furtado.
Furtado will be in this role for the next six months, at which point city officials will decide upon the next steps. Furtado is the first female to serve as police chief of the city.

Furtado comes from a family where her father, husband, and son have all served as police officers in the Fall River Police Department. She started her career as a police dispatcher in 1988 and climbed through the ranks to her most recent position as captain, where she has supervised the special operations division. She has also worked as a school resource officer at the high school in the city, and as a detective in the Major Crimes Division.
Furtado expressed her excitement about taking on this new role. She said that the department operates in much the same way as it did when her father was hired in 1968. She added that she plans to make officers feel more valued in their jobs and to modernize and reinvigorate the department, focusing on increased teamwork and collaboration.
Furtado replaces former Fall River Police Chief Paul Gauvin, who stepped down at the end of last month.
