Work begins on road resurfacing projects

The Illinois Department of Transport would like to inform the public that traffic delays will be expected, because resurfacing of several roads such as 159th Street and Harlem Avenue has begun.

The officials will be concentrating on a five-mile stretch of road that goes from Orland Park’s 94th Avenue up to Cicero Avenue, which is in Oak Forest. The part of the road that is being resurfaced also passes through Tinley Park and Orland Hills.

City officials also plan to construct new ramps on the sidewalk to make access easy for people with disabilities. In order for the construction crews to work, certain lanes will be closed every day. Motorists who regularly use these routes can expect regular delays and are advised to seek alternative routes. Printing services could be used to inform motorists about diversions and which lanes are closed.

The first phase of work on 159th Street involved repairing gutters, curbs and sidewalks and it was completed in November last year. Work on Harlem Avenue has already begun with the goal of fixing curbs that have deteriorated and installing ramps so that the road is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The work on both roads is expected to be completed in July.

Officials are requesting drivers to be mindful of the construction workers on the roads and to obey the temporary speed limits while driving through construction zones.
