The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, recently bought a property adjacent to the Wright home and studio it already owns and maintains.
Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked in Oak Park from 1889 until 1909. Today, the studio and home he designed, as well as four other Wright properties in the area, are under the ownership of the Trust, which has now added another building to its collection.
The Trust purchased a 2,218 square-foot house on Chicago Avenue for $340,000, although a Cook County Assessor valued it at $600,000, suggesting the property was offered to the Trust at a significant discount. The Italianate-style home, which was built in 1888, has no connection to Wright. Celeste Adams, president and CEO of the Trust, said the board of directors decided to buy the home as a future investment in the studio and home's future, not because it had any plans for the structure.
The Trust purchased Wright's studio and home in 1974. In 1989, it was called the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation, and at that time, it bought a house east of the Wright property, meaning the new acquisition is not the first time the Trust has bought an adjoining property. It purchased the house on the east of the Wright property from the village.
